The NZSA supports research in Anaesthesia. This takes the form of the John Ritchie and NZSA Registrar prizes.

The John Ritchie Prize for 2008 has been awarded to Dr Philip Cornish of Nelson.

Dr. David Rusk received the 2008 NZSA Trainee Prize for his paper "Do blood filters really need to be replaced during red blood cell administration?"
