New Zealand Anaesthesia Visiting Lectureship Nominations close on 20 September 2012

The NZA Visiting Lectureship was established in 2008 by NZAEC to promote the sharing of knowledge and experience through outstanding presentations amongst anaesthetic departments and practices.

Heads of departments and practices are invited to nominate members of their staff who have given an outstanding presentation at a CME session. The New Zealand Anaesthesia Visiting Lecturer should be an anaesthetist who will give a stimulating, informative and well delivered presentation to his or her colleagues and be willing to travel to two other centres in New Zealand to present their lecture/workshop.

Anaesthetists awarded the lectureship will each receive an award of $1500.

Two Visiting Lectureships Awarded in 2011

Specialist and Honorary Associate Professor Timothy Short and Associate Professor Simon Mitchell have been awarded New Zealand Anaesthesia Visiting Lectureships in 2011 for the  2012 year. Dr Mitchell and Dr Short will each present their lecturers at two regional hospital anaesthesia departments in 2012.

Dr Mitchell's Presentation is entitled "The WHO Surgical Safety Checklist: Potential and Pitfalls". Dr Mitchell was part of the original WHO investigation and his presentation at Auckland City Hospital highlighted simple and easily invoked strategies that assist effective use of the checklist.

Dr Dr Short's talk looks at the question "Does Anaesthetic Depth Alter Outcome?". The issue of depth monitors and their use is a very vexed one with confused literature. The ANZCA Trials Group is planning a large scale multi-centre study to try to answer some of the fundamental questions raised  by the ability to measure anaesthesia depth in real time.
